Lake Titicaca is one of the most popular destinations in Bolivia and among the most famous places in South America. The region around the lake was revered by the Inca as the center of the world and the birthplace of their empire. Today, Aymara communities around the lake continue to maintain sacred sites on the lake’s shores and islands. In Bolivia, the city of Copacabana is the gateway to Lake Titicaca. We offer single- and multi-day tours of Lake Titicaca, with trips to Sun Island, Moon Island, and Peru.

  • Go for a hike on Sun Island, walking in the footsteps of the ancient Inca
  • Sunbathe on Copacabana Beach, on the shores of one of highest lakes in the world
  • Unwind after a day of traveling and enjoy the impressive views at the Hotel Rosario Lago Titicaca, located on the shores of the Lake Titicaca

  • Day 1With departures from Copacabana, La Paz or Puno, our 2-day Lake Titicaca Tour begins with a boat ride from Copacabana to Isla del Sol. We arrive at the southern end Sun Island, home to a handful of small communities of Aymara villagers who farm the terraced hills of the island and tend to the Inca ruins scattered around the island. Isla del Sol is too hilly to accommodate vehicles, so a network of rocky trails crisscrosses the island. We hike up one of these paths into the hills that run the length of the island. From here, visitors can spot the Palacio del Inca, the best-known ruins on Isla de Sol. Palacio del Inca, or Palace of the Inca was built under the Incan Emperor Tupac Yupanqui. These ruins are thought to be the spiritual entrance to the sacred island. After a short hike, we arrive at the hilltop village of Yumani. This little outpost offers incredible views of the rest of the island and picturesque vistas across the vast, deep waters of Lake Titicaca. Snowcapped peaks of the Cordillera Real provide the backdrop for the scene. It takes about four hours to traverse the island, arriving at the iconic Escalera del Inca, or Inca Staircase. The Inca Staircase begins at a stone fountain, el Fuente del Inca, and the fresh spring water flows down channels alongside the ancient 205-step staircase. From here, we catch a sunset boat back to Copacabana.
  • Day 2After breakfast, we explore the city of Copacabana. This laidback, easygoing town has plenty to offer visitors. Spend the day exploring the market streets, strolling along Copacabana Beach and admiring the Moorish cathedral in the central plaza of town. Other highlights of the Copacabana tour include the 16th century shrine of “Our Lady of Copacabana”, the patron saint of the city, and several archaeological sites with Inca ruins in various stages of excavation. For those guests still looking for things do in Copacabana, a short but steep hike up Cerro Calvario or Calvary Road is a great option for a bird’s eye view of Copacabana as well as great views over Lake Titicaca to Peru. Cerro Calvario is lined with statues representing the 14 Stations of the Cross, and the ascent of the hill has become an important pilgrimage for devout Catholics across Bolivia and Peru. Stop for lunch at a beachfront stall before you regroup with the rest of the tour at Hotel Rosario Lago Titicaca. Turisbus offers guests the option of heading back to La Paz, or for those continuing to Peru, transportation is available to Puno. For travelers with more time to tour Lake Titicaca, combine your Copacabana and Sun Island tour, with another half day or full day tour of Moon Island.
